 Paragraph writing OR Expansion of a given idea INTRODUCTION There may be a question in the composition Portion requiring candidates to expand a given idea in a paragraph of about 200 words. The questioner may set a proverb or a quotation from a great writer to be enlarge into a paragraph. Thus, candidates may be asked to expand the idea contained in the following: (a) Strike when the iron is hot: (b) Honesty is the best policy: (c) Neither a lender nor a borrower be, Or the examiner may set some such subject for expansion as "The value of tact in life", or "The sense of honour", or "Disappointment on missing a train". The student should learn the technique of expansion by practice. He should correctly read the paragraphs that follow and that contain the expansion of given objective or ideas. ANTONYMS An antonym is a word which has opposite meaning of a word. Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. For example, the antonym of "hot" is "cold", the antonym of "happy" is "sad", and the antonym of "in" is "out". They play an important role in language, as they help to add precision and detail to communication by allowing speakers to express a wide range of ideas and emotions. Antonyms can be used to express contrast and add emphasis to a statement. For example, "I am not cold, I am warm," or "I am not happy, I am extremely unhappy." They are also used in literature and poetry to create imagery and convey emotions. In addition, antonyms are often used in language learning as a tool for vocabulary building and to improve the ability to understand and use a language.  SYNONYMS A synonym is a word, which has almost the same meaning of a word. The purpose of synonyms is to give flexibility and variety to a style. The great speakers and writers are lavish in their use of synonyms.  A good style is distinguished not only by its synonyms, but also by its antonyms. It is important to know when to use a word with the same meaning. It is equally important to know when to use a word with the opposite meaning. A style containing good synonyms is a rich style. A style containing good antonyms is a brilliant style. Two words of opposite meaning when cleverly placed in a sentence are like two skilful swordsmen that are engaged in a duel.
